Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing across Central Heights, AZ. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers are nationwide, perfect for those needing reliable hair assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair suffices. We offer diverse testing options for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom needs.

Hair follicle testing is gaining popularity, outpacing urine tests in drug screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often favor these due to stringent zero-tolerance policies. Such tests cover a 90-day window versus recent 5-day tests, are observed in collection, and resist tampering, offering unmatched reliability.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By encasing biomarkers within the fibers of a maturing hair strand, hair offers an extended chronicle of alcohol and drug utilization. A sample taken near the scalp can present an around 90-day detection window for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect specimen size for analysis. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent measure of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other forms, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four principal steps in lab processing a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the sample processing in a lab’s system. This step certifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizes extra data input that might not be present in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary test for drug abuse presence. While this step economically helps eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that show positive indications in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid) which makes hair drug screening highly challenging.

Positive Screening results receive Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing preliminary positive results are cleansed prior if required. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can trace substance use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a narrower detection frame.
  • Enhanced accuracy: Cheating a hair drug test is notably hard, enhancing result reliability.
  • Depicts usage trends: Offers a timeline of drug use over a stretch of time, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to trace recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair might fluctuate with hair color and personal hair growth differences.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
