Accredited Drug Testing provides holistic hair follicle drug screening services right in Colorado City, Arizona. For those in need of either a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with test sites established across all US cities to facilitate testing. Typically, hair from the crown or body measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is sufficient. Hair screenings can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has grown as a favored method among industry professionals. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now frequently opt for hair drug tests over conventional urine assessments. This method suits employers with strict drug policies, as well as court mandates and probation terms. Its chief advantage is the extended drug detection timeframe of up to 90 days, achieved through a supervised collection procedure that is nearly foolproof. But for identifying very recent drug use within the past five days, urine testing still remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer an extended record of substance use by locking biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can reflect up to roughly a 90-day period for identifying alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses over 10 panels, a specimen mass of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement is recommended. If scalp hair is unobtainable, the same amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair are exclusively about scalp hair. Body hair covers all other hair categories (like facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab processing of drug test outcomes are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a specimen is entered into a lab’s system. This phase includes checking that the specimen was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic tracking system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid evaluation for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal acceptability. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample turns out presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are drawn out from hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), hence hair drug analysis is the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive specimen is cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can uncover drug usage for up to three months, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Reveals usage trends: It can trace a pattern of drug intake over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are usually pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and disparities in individual hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
