Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Continental, Arizona. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair diagnostics is supported by testing facilities nationwide. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from either the crown or body is typically required for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

Recently, the preference for drug examinations has shifted more towards hair follicle analysis. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair testing over traditional urine methods. This method is preferred by entities enforcing no-drug tolerance policies due to its extended detectability period—up to 90 days—and difficulty to tamper with, making it highly reliable for observed collections. Nevertheless, for detecting substances used within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Using hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying substance use. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs. By collecting hair close to the scalp, it offers nearly a 3-month detection period for substances. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece containing around 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides approximately 100mg of hair, the perfect sample weight for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, tests with extra panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, it is suggested to use 150mg. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equal quantity of body hair can be used instead. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the introductory handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This stage confirms that the sample was securely sealed and correctly transported, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary analysis to identify potential drug use. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug consumption in most samples, any positive result needs confirmation for court validity. Samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial batch and prepared for Extraction. During this step, drugs are separated from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most intricate method to conduct.

Verification of any presumptive positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, thus yielding more reliable outcomes.
  • Shows past data: It can depict a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can impact the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Despite being commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Continental, AZ

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests by offering unparalleled detection windows and reliability. In Continental, AZ, the precision of hair testing means catching drug use that urine tests might overlook. With the longer detection period, hair tests cover a broader spectrum of substance use history, making them more advantageous.

Employers and professionals prefer hair testing because it minimizes the risk of sample manipulation. Unlike urine tests, hair testing is challenging to tamper with, providing confidence in the results' integrity. This makes it a preferred choice where accuracy and reliability are paramount.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Continental, AZ

In Continental, AZ, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, capturing substance usage over a 90-day period, unlike shorter-term analyses. This provides employers with a detailed overview of an employee's or applicant's potential drug use history, aiding in more informed hiring or monitoring decisions.

This extended timeframe for drug detection means hair tests can reveal patterns of substance use long after the initial consumption, offering insights that urine tests, which have a much shorter detection period, cannot match. As such, they provide a comprehensive view that aids in making more responsible decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
