In Drysdale, Arizona, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in these tests for both hair drug and alcohol analysis, they have centers in every city nationwide. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches, either from the crown of your head or other body parts, is required for testing. Hair samples can be checked for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specified testing options.

Over the past few years, hair follicle testing has increasingly become a standard method for drug screening. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair testing over urine tests. Its primary advantage lies in its extended detection span, lasting up to 90 days, observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. The hair captures a long-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers in the hair's fibers as it grows. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal usage details for up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered an optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a larger sample of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen is suggested. Should scalp hair not be accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. Discussions about head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, etc.).

Process Overview

Drug test laboratory processes involve four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails integrating a sample into the lab system. This step checks the sample for proper sealing and shipment, attributes a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any data gaps not addressed by the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial, cost-effective assessment for potential drug use across most samples, yet a positive designation requires confirmation for judicial acceptance. Samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening must have a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original batch for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than any other technique (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging to execute.

Any presumptive positive result undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washings are applied to all presumptive positive samples before confirmation. The complete procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation follows CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation standards and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug testing can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection times of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is very challenging, hence results tend to be more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a record of drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent tendencies.

Limitations:

  • Not ideal for recent consumption detection: Drugs emerge as detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal growth differences can impact metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test investigates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests in Drysdale, AZ, are preferred over urine tests due to their superior detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle analyses aren't easily manipulated. These tests provide an extended detection window, allowing for a better understanding of long-term substance use. This is essential for employers, courts, and probation officers who need reliable and precise data.

Drug use detection through hair testing offers both precision and reliability unmatched by urine tests. The long-lasting detection period and difficulty in cheating make hair testing more dependable than traditional methods. This advantage is particularly useful in settings where substance use must be strictly monitored and controlled.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Drysdale, AZ, enables employers to see a detailed history of substance use, with a detection window extending up to 90 days. This comprehensive view contrasts with urine tests, which only cover recent use, helping in making informed decisions about potential hires or current employees.

Unlike other methods, hair follicle testing captures a long-term picture of drug use. Employers benefit from this by gaining insights into a person's substance habits over a significantly longer duration. This reliable method plays a pivotal role in creating safe and compliant workplaces.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Drysdale, AZ, significantly reduces sample tampering risks, resulting in trustworthy results. This method ensures that the samples are not easily altered, preserving their integrity and accuracy, ultimately providing results that are hard to question.

The reliability of hair follicle tests in detecting substance use is enhanced by their resistance to tampering. This method offers an added assurance that the results are genuine, helping employers and legal systems maintain integrity in their drug testing procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
