For comprehensive hair follicle drug tests, Accredited Drug Testing offers full services in El Mirage, Arizona. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we boast nationwide centers capable of these tests. Hair on your head or body, ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches, is required. These tests analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer custom testing.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screenings. This method is favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over the standard urine test. Hair tests support zero-tolerance policies, probation, and judicial use. They offer a 90-day detection period, ensure direct supervision during collection, and are hard to manipulate. For recent (within 5 days) drug use, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into a robust mechanism for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the structure of the expanding hair strand, hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs. When collected near the scalp, hair can present approximately a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair may be obtained. When indicating head hair, it specifically relates to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of the sample into a lab's system. This process confirms that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and incorporates any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial prompt evaluation for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an economical solution to negate drug consumption in most samples, any positive screen must be corroborated to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that test positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which underlines why hair drug screening is the most intricate technique to conduct.

Verification of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and in conformity with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is quite challenging to fiddle with a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
