Accredited Drug Testing in Elephant Head, Arizona offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our specialization in hair drug and alcohol tests is supported by a nationwide network of testing centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized.

Recently, drug testing trends have increasingly favored hair follicle analysis. This method is preferred by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts over urine testing. Hair follicle tests are chosen for zero-tolerance policies, legal cases, and probation. They boast up to 90 days of drug use detectability, observed collection, and are difficult to tamper with. For drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair holds a comprehensive record of alcohol and substance use by capturing biomarkers in the strands of hair that are actively growing. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of specimen is advised. It is recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four fundamental stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step that integrates a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a quick preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be authenticated for court admissibility. Any samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This step extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive result in the screening phase is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples may be washed before confirmation as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accrediting standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use spanning up to 90 days, in contrast with urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Increased difficulty to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, contributing to the accuracy of the results.
  • Delivers historical insights: Capable of revealing a history of drug use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Typically, it takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing formats.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Elephant Head, AZ, hair follicle testing is superior to traditional urine tests. While urine tests offer a limited detection window, hair tests detect substances over a long period, enhancing accuracy. Employers seeking reliability choose hair testing due to its comprehensive results, capturing a detailed drug use timeline, making it ideal for enforcing drug-free policies.

Comparative Advantages:

  • Long Detection Period: Up to 90 days.
  • Difficult to Falsify: Less susceptible to manipulation.
  • Detailed History: Provides a substance use overview.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Elephant Head, AZ, offers an extensive detection window, identifying drug use up to 90 days. This enables employers and other authorities to gain a holistic view of an individual's substance history, assisting in informed decision-making. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
