Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing throughout Flores, Arizona. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this area, with facilities across the nation ready to conduct these assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed for testing. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often mandate these tests over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers adhering to strict drug use policies, as well as courts and individuals on probation. The main advantage is a lengthier detection window, up to 90 days, with collection that is observed and almost tamper-proof. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the definitive choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-standing record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a timeframe of up to roughly 90 days for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands of hair (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for both screening and confirmatory purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings beyond 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be accessed, a similar quantity of body hair may be obtained. When we mention head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug testing outcome is performed through four crucial stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a specimen into a lab’s framework. This step involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening offers an economical approach to eliminating drug usage for the majority of specimens, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive samples in Screening indeed require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drug substances are extracted from hair at notably low concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The overall lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is thoroughly reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing identifies drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited timeframe.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is particularly challenging, increasing the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical data: It charts drug use over a duration rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drug presence in hair becomes detectable only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not on the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
