Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Flowing Springs, Arizona. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing provides you with centers across the Nation capable of executing this test. Generally, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, either from the head or body. Hair testing options are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, court systems, and probation officers. An advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their prolonged detection window, reaching up to 90 days; they are conducted under supervision and are nearly impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly become a highly effective means for detecting substance use. Hair serves as a long-term indicator of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers in the hair strand fibers as they grow. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol usage for up to around three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, it is relatively resistant to tampering, and it is convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment from approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp results in 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation processes. For tests involving EtG, addons, or more than 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. Use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If no scalp hair is available, a comparable amount of body hair is suitable. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair whereas "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage wherein a sample is entered into the laboratory's systems. This entails checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody may not cover.

Screening is a preliminary swift assessment to detect drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive outcomes in Screening require confirmation for them to be legally valid. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening must undergo confirmatory testing.

When a sample tests presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair from the initial sample is readied for Extraction. This phase involves drawing drugs from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or saliva), accounting for why hair drug screening is the toughest technique to implement.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The entire procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is subject to review under the guidelines of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Longer detection duration: Hair drug tests detect drugs for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Historical consumption patterns: It provides information on drug usage patterns over extended periods, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair within about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug screening methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: These tests are known as "hair follicle tests", although they examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
