Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Forest Lakes Estates, Arizona. If you're in need of hair or alcohol testing, this organization excels in hair analysis, with facilities across all major cities in the United States capable of administering a hair test. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body for the procedure. Hair evaluations can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke testing methods.

Recently, the hair follicle drug testing method has gained popularity over traditional drug testing techniques. Many firms, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts favor hair testing over conventional urine screenings. Hair follicle tests are trusted by corporations with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal institutions, and probation services. The key advantage of this test is its extensive detection duration, usually spanning 90 days, carried out in a monitored setting, making it nearly foolproof. However, for detecting very recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline for detecting alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can provide approximately a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is recommended. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This process includes verifying the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial quick check for drugs of abuse. While it's a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be admissible in court. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is retrieved from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other tests (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, which increases the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a timeline of drug usage over a period, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
