Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Gadsden, Arizona. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair inspections, boasting locations in every major city across the Nation to conduct such tests. On the head's crown, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, or body hair may suffice generally. Hair tests can be checked for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing preferences.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over regular urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal institutions, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of hair tests is the extensive detection span for drug use, generally reaching up to 90 days, gathered through an observed process, making it nearly impossible to deceive. However, for detecting substance use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. Obtained from near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's diameter) near the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels above 10, 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. When scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for determining drug test results involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. It includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for illicit drugs. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive outcome must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and set for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are derived from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a briefer detection timeline.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than alternative drug testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Elements including hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
