In Haivana Nakya, Arizona, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle analysis. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our experts deliver specialized hair testing at numerous national centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair are necessary for the procedure. This method allows for the examination of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become popular in recent years. Employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer hair over urine tests. It's favored for zero-tolerance workplaces, court mandates, and probation. Hair tests are superior for detecting drug use, revealing substance history over 90 days, and minimizing fraud risks. However, urine tests remain effective for recent past screenings up to 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can deliver up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drug usage. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil in thickness) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal sample for screening and validation. For EtG enhancements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory's system. This comprises ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid analysis for drugs of misuse. While screening serves as a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug use in most specimens, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation to be legally viable. Samples with positive preliminary results in screening do require a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a positive preliminary result in screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Validation of any preliminary positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with preliminary positive readings are cleansed before the confirmation process as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, surpassing urine tests that have a shorter detection window.
  • Challenge to circumvent: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely tough, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption over months, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: It requires an estimated 5-7 days for drugs to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter the drug metabolites concentration in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Haivana Nakya, AZ, the advantages of hair follicle tests over urine tests are well-documented. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
