Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests in Harris, Arizona. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, we operate centers nationwide that are equipped to conduct these tests. Testing typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair examinations can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specialized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for substance screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair tests over urine tests. These are essential for employers with zero-tolerance policies and those monitoring individuals on probation, as they offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, are conducted under supervision, and are difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, when assessing recent drug use within a five-day window, urine tests prove more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a timeline of alcohol and other substance exposure by locking biomarkers within the strands of newly grown hair. When gathered near the scalp, one can utilize hair to detect alcohol and drugs within an approximate three-month period. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal specimen for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or testing beyond 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale for measuring the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair might be used. The term "head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. In contrast, "body hair" encompasses other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing for drug testing encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample within the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a primary inspection for drug abuse. Despite being cost-efficient to rule out drug consumption in numerous samples, a positive result in Screening necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require additional verification.

For samples marked as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial collection and set for Extraction. In Extraction, substances are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods like urine or oral fluids, highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screen is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive is cleansed as needed before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long-lasting detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Enhances result reliability: The challenge of circumventing a hair drug test bolsters the precision of the outcomes.
  • Offers usage history: Hair tests reveal a drug use pattern over time, instead of merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use non-detection: Drug presence becomes apparent in hair in about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other methodologies.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence drug metabolites' concentration in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the scalp-located hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
