Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Hayden, Arizona. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist. Our testing centers, situated in numerous cities across the nation, are equipped to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a popular method for drug testing. Many employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine analysis. Ideal for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as courts and those on probation, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection period up to 90 days, collected under observation, and is far less susceptible to tampering. However, for recent drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine testing remains highly precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly acknowledged as an effective means for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture a prolonged record of alcohol and drug metabolites by embedding biomarkers within the growing fibers of hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal evidence of alcohol and substance use for up to roughly 90 days. This method of collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 individual hairs (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil), from the area nearest to the scalp will yield approximately 100mg, which is the required amount for thorough screening and confirmation. For EtG testing, additional panels, or if the test exceeds 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precision in weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is an acceptable alternative. It's important to note that head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug testing results encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory’s system. This process includes verifying that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any absent data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening offers an initial analysis for traces of drug use. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for eliminating drug presence in the majority of samples, any positive findings must be substantiated to be legally valid. Samples exhibiting presumptive positivity in Screening must undergo further Confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, explaining the complexity of performing hair drug analysis.

Any positive findings from the Screening phase undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process prior to Confirmation as required. The full laboratory procedure from start to finish is thereby subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection capability: Hair drug tests can reveal drug intake for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection window offered by urine tests.
  • Resistance to falsification: Tampering with a hair drug test is highly challenging, which bolsters result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: The tests can chart a history of drug usage over an extended period rather than only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Undetectable recent usage: There is a delay of approximately 5-7 days before drugs become discernible in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests generally incur greater expenses compared to other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual distinctions in hair growth rate can influence metabolite concentration in hair samples.

Note: Even though sometimes termed as "hair follicle tests," this test actually examines the strand itself—not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
