In Joseph City, Arizona, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing and network of testing centers across the nation make it convenient, including availability in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed in most cases, and tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, individuals on probation, and courts. A significant advantage includes a longer detection period, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, nearly preventing cheating. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal usage information for alcohol and other drugs for roughly a 3-month timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, tricky to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion containing approximately 200 hair strands (around a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect specimen for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to gather 150mg of the hair. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is suggested. When scalp hair isn't available, an equal amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean just scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory journey of a drug test outcome comprises four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial intake of a specimen into the lab’s system. This step checks that the sample is sealed correctly and delivered as required, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any unfinished data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Despite Screening being an affordable approach to dismiss drug intake in most samples, a positive result needs further confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples preliminarily positive during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are recovered from hair at diminished concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), signifying why hair drug analysis is the most intricate procedure.

Positive results from Screening are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as deemed necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug intake spanning 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Chronological information: It uncovers a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: A span of 5-7 days is required for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug analyses tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Inconsistent results: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth variation can impact the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Joseph City, AZ, hair follicle testing holds several advantages over urine testing. One major benefit is superior detection accuracy, casting a wider net over substance use history. Unlike urine tests, hair testing is nearly impossible to manipulate, providing reliable results that employers, courts, and professionals can trust for decisions based on a longer history of usage.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Joseph City, AZ offers an unparalleled extended detection window. By capturing drug use history over 90 days, employers benefit from a more complete picture of an employee's or applicant's substance habits. This wide detection range allows businesses to make informed decisions based on the comprehensive history provided by hair samples.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Joseph City, AZ, hair follicle testing is highly tamper-resistant, a testament to its design. Hair samples significantly reduce the risk of adulteration, offering a fail-safe method that ensures results remain reliable and unquestionable. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
