In Kachina Village, AZ, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol, we excel in hair analysis and offer testing centers nationwide. Adequate hair length is necessary for accurate results. Our tests can check for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more tailored options.

The trend for drug testing has shifted toward hair follicle tests. They are favored by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals over urine tests due to their zero-tolerance policies. Hair follicle tests are preferred for their extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection, and difficulty of adulteration. Yet, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests are still most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is viewed as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable portion of body hair may be taken. When referring to head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab process of producing a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves verifying the sample's sealing and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing additional data entry if not completed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to often rule out drug usage on most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted for Preparation. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as applicable. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection range: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair takes around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Differing results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences might impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Kachina Village, AZ, hair follicle testing offers several advantages over traditional urine tests. Superior detection accuracy is one of the primary benefits, as hair testing can trace substance use over a longer duration. Unlike urine tests, which typically cover only short-term use, hair tests provide a broader view and are less prone to sample tampering.

The reliability of hair follicle testing surpasses that of standard urine tests. It delivers more precise detection of substances, offering a long-term view of drug use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
