In Klagetoh, Arizona, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. Need a test for drugs or alcohol? We're experts in this form of testing and have national testing centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the scalp or body. Hair analysis can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests are the preferred method, surpassing traditional urine tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts favor them. They serve organizations with strict no-drug policies and monitor individuals under legal supervision. The extended detection window, up to 90 days, and the directly supervised collection process make them highly reliable, even though urine tests are still best for use within the preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the developing hair strand. When hair is harvested from near the scalp, it can provide an approximate 3-month period of detection for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising about 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) taken near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is preferred. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for determining a drug test result is comprised of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any other data entry not submitted via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid drug abuse check. While Screening is a cost-effective means to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result at this stage requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample exhibits a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are rinsed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is very arduous to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides a historical record: It furnishes a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
