Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in La Paz Valley, Arizona. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we're experts in hair testing, with facilities in all major cities across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body will suffice for testing. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific testing requirements.

The trend in recent years has shifted towards utilizing hair follicle drug tests more often. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. This method is favored by organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, the judiciary system, and probation officers. A key advantage is the prolonged detection window for substance use, extending up to 90 days, facilitated by an observed collection process that minimizes cheating risks. However, urine tests remain the most effective for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now viewed as an efficient method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the strands, hair gives a long-term record of these substances in the body. If collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of around three months for various substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample roughly 1.5 inches long, consisting of about 200 strands of hair (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp, will yield 100mg, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and those beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advocate measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair refers solely to hair from the scalp, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four essential stages in the lab analysis of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where the lab incorporates a sample into their system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening provides an initial quick assessment for drug abuse indicators. It’s a cost-efficient technique to exclude drug usage for most samples, although a positive result here must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Presumptive positives in this test need further confirmation.

For samples suggesting positivity at Screening, a portion of hair is taken from the original sample and set for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration in this stage compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair testing one of the most intricate practices.

Confirmation of any positive screen results is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS processes. All samples with a presumptive positive result undergo a wash before confirmation. The entire progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, which is longer than the window for urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insights: It can show a drug usage pattern over time, instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot uncover recent drug use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be measurable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests often cost more than other testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although these are referred to as "hair follicle tests", they're only concerned with the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
