Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Lower Santan Village, Arizona. For those needing a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in this field and has centers nationwide equipped to conduct hair tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol, ETG, or other custom testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug testing, frequently replacing urine tests. It's often requested by employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services use hair tests due to their longer detection capability of up to 90 days. Although it's difficult to tamper with hair follicle tests, urine tests remain effective for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has rapidly become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. Hair collected near the scalp can show drug and alcohol use for up to a three-month window. This method is simple to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) taken closest to the scalp will give 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg of hair. It is recommended to weigh the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "Body hair" encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test results involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of entering a sample into a lab's system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any pending data entry that is not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While it's cost-effective and rules out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

For samples that show a presumptively positive result in Screening, further hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at far lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing very challenging.

Confirmation for any positive screen is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Detects drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests cover a shorter period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The test's design makes it tough to manipulate results, enhancing accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: Reveals a pattern of drug use over time instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become visible in hair.
  • Cost: Generally more expensive compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine tests in Lower Santan Village, AZ?
Hair testing offers significant advantages with superior detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, hair samples retain drug traces for longer periods, making it less likely that recent use is missed. Its reliability shines as hair tests don't depend on the shorter detection window that limits urine testing effectiveness.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Lower Santan Village, AZ, detects drug use over extended periods, even up to 90 days, making it a powerful tool for employers. This long detection window offers a comprehensive look into an individual's substance use history, providing a holistic view of behavioral patterns crucial for employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Lower Santan Village, AZ, substantially minimizes the risk of sample tampering, ensuring results remain reliable and truly reflective of the individual's substance use. This robustness in testing serves as a deterrent to cheating attempts, as altering hair samples is far more complex and less likely compared to urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
