Certified Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Nelson, Arizona. Whether it's a drug or alcohol hair test, our focus is on precision hair testing with centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. We can conduct tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide custom hair analysis options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred testing method. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often opt for it over traditional urine tests. It's favored by zero-tolerance employers, judiciary systems, and individuals on probation. The standout advantage is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, and its inability to be easily tampered with. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand during growth. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide roughly a three-month detection period for alcohol and substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to alter, and simple to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG tests, additional elements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample with a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's introductory handling within a laboratory's framework. This step includes confirming that the sample has been properly sealed and transported, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data recording not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to negate drug use in most samples, a positive result needs validation for court admissibility. Any samples suspected of being positive in Screening mandate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample seem positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. Drugs are extracted in this phase from hair at much reduced concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any potential positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All purportedly positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria alongside ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for as many as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a narrower detection span.
  • Challenge to fabricate results: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Delivers past usage data: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time rather than just immediate prior usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot reveal recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing alternatives.
  • Result inconsistency: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Advantages of Hair vs. Urine Testing highlight hair testing's superior accuracy in detecting substances over traditional urine methods. Its extended detection period and higher reliability make it the preferred choice in Nelson, AZ, providing a clearer picture of an individual's drug use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
