Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Paulden, Arizona. If you're seeking a hair or alcohol test, look no further, as we excel in hair testing with locations across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. We provide analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized hair testing needs.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has gained popularity in recent years for drug screening. More and more employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over typical urine tests. This method is crucial for employers with strict no-drug policies, judiciary needs, and probation monitoring. Its main advantage lies in the extended drug detection timeline of up to 90 days, with secure and supervised collection, making it difficult to tamper. Nonetheless, for identifying drug use in the immediate past five days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximate three-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory's system. It involves verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at far lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for a period of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It is quite challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical information: It can present a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
