Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Peridot, Arizona. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise is unmatched, and we offer facilities across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed for testing. Our hair exams can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailor-made options.

Lately, drug screening processes increasingly incorporate hair follicle testing. Many organizations, judicial systems, and drug counseling experts now prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Such tests are favored by entities with strict drug use policies and are common for court or probation mandates. Key advantages include a detection timeframe extending up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and difficulty in tampering. Yet, for recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests are preferred for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug use by incorporating biomarkers into the fibers of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively. Other body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in processing a laboratory drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of entering a sample into a lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any necessary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid for legal matters. Samples that test presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides historical insights: It can reveal a drug usage pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
