In Picacho, Arizona, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle screening. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, we provide services in all cities across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for drug testing. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists often opt for hair testing instead of traditional urine testing. Hair testing is favored for zero-tolerance policies, probation cases, and provides up to a 90-day detection window, making it nearly impossible to tamper. However, for recent use within 5 days, urine tests are more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair sample testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by embedding biomarkers within its fiber structure. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a span of around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, extra tests, or analyses beyond 10 panels, an amount of 150mg from the sample is advised. A jeweler’s scale is suggested for accurate measurement of the sample. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable amount of body hair can be used instead. When referring to head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result includes four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary phase where a sample is entered into a lab’s system. This step encompasses confirming appropriate sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accomplishing any extra data input not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening provides an economical method to dismiss drug use in most cases, a positive result in Screening requires further confirmation to be legally viable. Samples with a presumptive positive outcome during Screening need secondary verification.

Should a sample register as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is collected from the original sample for further Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed if necessary. The entire laboratory process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter span.
  • Challenging to deceive: The difficulty in falsifying results makes hair drug testing more reliable.
  • Delivers historical insights: Offers insight into prolonged drug usage patterns, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Although commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Picacho, AZ

Hair testing offers unparalleled benefits over urine testing. One prominent advantage is its extended detection period, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window. With a hair test, substances can be detected up to 90 days back, capturing a broader spectrum of drug use.

Furthermore, hair tests in Picacho, AZ, showcase superior accuracy and reliability. While urine tests can be compromised, hair tests provide consistent results, making them ideal for environments demanding the highest level of certainty in drug screening protocols.

Extended Detection Window

The Extended Detection Window of hair follicle testing in Picacho, AZ, is pivotal for employers seeking a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history. By examining up to 90 days of drug use, hair tests offer insights into patterns of behavior, helping employers make informed hiring or retention decisions.

This prolonged detection window in hair testing captures a detailed drug use history over several months, not limited to just the recent activities. This aspect of hair testing can be crucial for employers, especially in roles requiring high responsibility or safety standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Picacho, AZ

Hair follicle testing significantly reduces the risk of sample tampering. Given its nature, altering a hair specimen is complex compared to urine samples. This makes hair tests a more reliable and virtually tamper-proof option, ensuring integrity in drug testing results.

Employers in Picacho, AZ, benefit from the unquestionable reliability of hair tests. There's greater confidence that results are precise and genuine, as efforts to cheat are minimized. This tamper-resistance is a key reason why hair testing is favored over other methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
