Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Rio Rico Northeast, Arizona. Whether you require a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with facilities across the nation ready to conduct these evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Our tests can examine substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more commonplace in drug screening methods. A growing number of employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts favor this technique over traditional urine tests. Employers upholding zero-tolerance drug policies, legal institutions, and probationers commonly use hair follicle tests due to their extended detection timeframe for drug use, lasting up to 90 days, through supervised collection processes, which are almost impossible to manipulate. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal usage of alcohol and other substances over a period of up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp delivers 100mg, which is the optimal amount for initial and confirmatory screenings. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a corresponding volume of body hair may be used. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a lab drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s protocol, ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped appropriately, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any residual data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial, expedient assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach for excluding drug use in most specimens, a positive result must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive outcome during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

For samples that screen positively, additional hair is drawn from the initial collection for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug analysis is deemed the most challenging to conduct.

Confirming any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized in alignment with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO/IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect recent usage.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with hair drug tests is challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It illustrates a drug usage pattern over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent usage detection: Drugs appear in hair about 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher expenses than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," the actual test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing in Rio Rico Northeast, AZ, provides superior detection compared to urine tests. By capturing a longer window of drug use history, employers have a more comprehensive assessment. Hair testing is not only more reliable and accurate but also tougher to cheat.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
