Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Rio Rico Southeast, Arizona. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol via hair sampling, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert, with locations across the nation that can conduct such exams. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

The approach to drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle tests over recent years. Businesses, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose hair over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are popular with employers with zero-drug policies, the courts, and probationers. A major advantage is the long detection span—up to 90 days—through observed collection, making it nearly infallible. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the best for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use within a detection window of up to approximately three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and is easily transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly matching the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirming results. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and/or beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair refers to all other types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the processing of a drug test result in the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data needed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary review for drugs of abuse. Although it offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. During this stage, drugs are secluded from hair at a notably reduced concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), justifying the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The complete laboratory journey from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair qualification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can trace drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting urine tests that provide a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: The difficulty involved in falsifying a hair drug test results in more precise outcomes.
  • Chronological use data: It offers insight into a drug usage pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection of drugs in hair requires about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur greater costs compared to other methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
