Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug examination services in Sacaton Flats Village, Arizona. For individuals needing a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing extends nationwide, with facilities equipped to perform such assessments. Ideally, a person should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on their head. These tests can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other testing needs.

The popularity of hair follicle drug tests has increased in recent years over traditional methods. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair tests over urine tests. This is especially common for organizations with strict drug policies and those managing probationary cases. The standout advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, making tampering quite difficult. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the preferred option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When hair is collected from close to the scalp, it can reveal up to approximately a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. The method of collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing about 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in the lab consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab's system. This process includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be considered valid in a legal setting. Any samples identified as potentially positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

In the event a sample tests potentially positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening remains the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples identified as potentially positive undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter window.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a usage pattern over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
