Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout Santan, Arizona. Whether you’re in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, we specialize in such testing and operate centers across all major cities in the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head is required, though body hair is an alternative. Hair analysis can track a range of substances, including drugs and alcohol.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence. This method is increasingly required by employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with stringent drug policies, legal institutions, and probationary programs. The key advantage of this test is its extended detection window of up to 90 days. Unlike urine tests, it is conducted under observation and is very difficult to fake, though urine tests remain preferable for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair provides an extended historical record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. By collecting hair near the scalp, a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs can be achieved. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's size), closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step verifies that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data tasks not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid examination for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be validated to be legally admissible. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, in contrast to urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, providing more reliable results.
  • Displays usage history: It can demonstrate a pattern of usage over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often used, but the actual analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Santan, AZ, clearly outperforms traditional urine tests. This method offers superior accuracy and precision in detecting drug use. Hair testing unveils a detailed history of substance use, unlike urine tests that capture only a snapshot of recent use. Professionals who insist on utmost reliability support hair testing for its thorough insights and reduced error margins.

In contrast, urine tests, although standard, can miss critical information due to their short detection window, introducing potential inaccuracies and vulnerabilities in defecting recent substance use.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Santan, AZ, provides an unparalleled extended detection window, capturing a substance use history up to 90 days. This longer span offers a valuable perspective that short-term methods like urine tests cannot. Employers benefit from this detailed overview, which supports comprehensive assessments of a candidate's history and habits.

Job environments demanding long-term drug history insights find hair testing's broader detection window indispensable, ensuring informed, reliable decisions regarding hiring and retention.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Santan, AZ, the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests ensures trustworthy results. Unlike urine tests, susceptible to manipulation, hair tests drastically reduce tampering risks, providing credible and consistent results. The collection and testing processes are closely monitored, significantly enhancing sample integrity.

This is a critical feature, empowering organizations to trust the data obtained and rely on it for crucial decision-making regarding employees or cases depending on accurate testing outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
