Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests in Sonoita, Arizona. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with locations across all cities Nationwide available for conducting these tests. Typically, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, or body hair can be used if necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific requirements.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common practice in drug screening. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method appeals to employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation services. Hair testing's key advantage is its extensive detection window of approximately 90 days, with a direct observation during sample collection, making it difficult to tamper with the results. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within its strands during growth. When taken from near the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is easy, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample amounting to around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't present, a comparable quantity of body hair may be obtained. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This process ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any additional data entry beyond what an electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an economical means to identify drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates verification to be valid in legal settings. Any samples reading presumptively positive during Screening demand further confirmation.

For samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening, extra hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at far lesser concentrations than found in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed prior to verification as needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably hard, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical usage data: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot uncover recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to be visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
