Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Sonora, Arizona. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we at Accredited Drug Testing are leading experts in hair testing with facilities in every city Nationwide that are equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair is required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

In recent years, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug testing over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are adopted by employers upholding zero-tolerance drug use policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their longer drug detection period, typically up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making them nearly impossible to cheat. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Testing hair is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair fibers collect biomarkers over time, providing a detailed record of drug and alcohol usage. By collecting hair near the scalp, a detection period of about 3 months for alcohol and other substances is possible. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample for testing. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes for drug test results comprise four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves incorporating a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring it was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data input not covered by electronic systems.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug use. It's a low-cost method to exclude drug usage for most samples, yet confirmation is necessary for any positive results to be legally valid. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases of positive Screening outcomes, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Drugs are isolated from hair at much lower levels than in other methods (like urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug analysis particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening findings is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation if needed. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, follows both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating the results of a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing their accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug use across months, unlike tests that only show recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: A period of 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Varying results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair samples.

Note: Often dubbed "hair follicle tests," these tests inspect the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
