In South Tucson, Arizona, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screen, our specialty in hair testing is unrivaled with centers nationwide ready to administer a test. Your hair should be 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or from the body in most scenarios. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific options.

Nowadays, hair follicle drug tests have become a favored approach in drug screenings. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine methods. This test type is favored by employers with zero tolerance policies, legal venues, and those on probation. Its main advantage is the extended 90-day detection window, the supervised collection, and its high resistance to tampering. Urine tests are most effective for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting alcohol and drug usage. The growth of hair strands entraps biomarkers that reveal a long-term history of these substances. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and various drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A collection of roughly 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When we mention head hair, we mean only scalp hair. All other hair types, such as facial and axillary, fall under body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result is comprised of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where the sample enters a lab’s system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any lacking data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening performs an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective in excluding drug use in most samples, a positive Screening must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Any samples that give a presumptive positive result during Screening require a further confirmation step.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive result, additional hair from the initial specimen is prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing the most challenging to carry out.

The confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positive results are washed prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Increased accuracy: Due to the difficulty of tampering with hair tests, their results are more reliable.
  • Historical insight: They can illustrate the pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual variations in hair growth influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as “hair follicle tests,” the process actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
