In Sunflower, Arizona, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair testing and have assessment centers available nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing choices.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing is being increasingly adopted as a method for drug screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are progressively favoring hair tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers who enforce zero-tolerance drug policies, for court cases, and for individuals on probation. Their key advantage is a detection window lasting up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making it exceptionally difficult to falsify. For detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing captures biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers over time. A sample near the scalp can reveal alcohol and drug use history for up to three months. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides the optimal 100mg needed for screening and validation. For testing involving EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, a quantity of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement of the sample is suggested. In the event that scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair is an alternative. "Head hair" strictly refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The processing in a lab of a drug test result consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system, including verifying the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. It is an economical method to eliminate drug use on the bulk of samples; however, positive results must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Samples that indicate a likely positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screen occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumably positive samples are cleansed as needed. The full process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests capture drug use for a period of up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides historical data: Delivers a comprehensive overview of drug usage patterns over time, beyond mere recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: A period of about 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: The expense of hair drug tests is typically higher than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
