Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sweetwater, Arizona. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, turn to Accredited Drug Testing for specialized hair testing across our nationwide centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a preferred method over traditional urine testing for drug screening. Employers with strict drug policies, legal institutions, and probation programs often select hair tests due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, ensured by an observed collection process. Although reliable, for drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair reveals a long-term history of alcohol and drug use. When taken near the scalp, it offers an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, the risk of tampering is minimal, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's recommended to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. By "head hair," we mean scalp hair exclusively. "Body hair" encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps in processing a lab drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. It includes verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial drug-of-abuse check. Though Screening cost-effectively eliminates drug use in most samples, a positive test requires confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate secondary validation.

When a sample is presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair from the original sample is extracted for further testing. Drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations than those found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Positive screening results are validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Tamper-resistant: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, increasing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are often costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the evaluation targets the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
