Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments across Tacna, Arizona. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise in hair testing is accompanied by nationwide testing centers in every city, ensuring availability. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is mandatory, either from the head's crown or body. These tests can analyze substances, ETG/alcohol, and other personalized hair analysis options.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests has heightened in recent times. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists now opt for hair-based drug assessments over urine analyses. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation subjects predominantly choose this method. The significant advantage lies in its prolonged detection duration, often extending up to 90 days, with an observed collection process ensuring no tampering. For recent drug usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the optimal choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, creating a long-term record of alcohol and drugs. Hair taken close to the scalp can reveal up to a 3-month period of alcohol and drug detection. Collection is easy, tampering is challenging, and shipping is straightforward.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Utilize a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair implies scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial sample entry into the laboratory system, including ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial swift evaluation for drugs of misuse. While it offers a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with a preliminary positive result during Screening require additional confirmation.

For a presumptively positive sample in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is notably complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed employing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It illustrates a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are necessary for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
