Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Tonopah, Arizona. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing and our nationwide centers ensure you can get tested in any city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is necessary. Hair analysis can be performed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug screenings. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over traditional urine ones. These tests benefit employers with zero-tolerance policies, court systems, and those on probation due to their longer detection period, typically up to 90 days, observed collection process, and difficulty to tamper with. However, for recent drug use, within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can provide a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by encapsulating markers within the strands of growing hair. When sourced near the scalp, hair can present up to a 3-month period of detection for alcohol and related substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp results in 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, the same volume of body hair might be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we are solely referring to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid analysis for substance abuse. Screening provides a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, yet a positive result needs confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

For samples identified as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are pulled from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for hair drug screenings being especially challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to undermine: It is exceedingly hard to compromise a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical insight: It provides a usage pattern over an extended period instead of only recent activity.

Constraints:

  • Inability to detect recent activity: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Tonopah, AZ, hair follicle testing significantly outperforms traditional urine tests. Thanks to its superior detection accuracy, this method reveals substance traces that urine tests might miss. Employers and agencies find it more reliable given the longer detection window, often extending up to 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
