Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Tortolita, Arizona. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities in all major cities across the nation conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can evaluate for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized.

In recent years, hair follicle tests have become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are utilized by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. A significant advantage of hair tests is their extensive detection window for substance use, up to 90 days, with supervised collection to avoid tampering. Yet, for recent drug use detection, within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures chemical indicators within its strands, offering a prolonged timeline of substance use. Collected near the scalp, hair can show drug and alcohol intake for as long as 3 months. It is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

Obtaining a sample of 1.5 inches, roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a scale designed for jewelry to measure the sample. If head hair is missing, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in analyzing a drug test in a lab encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample's seal and shipment are intact, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a rapid assessment for substance use. Although Screening offers a cost-effective means of detecting drug presence in most samples, any positive screens necessitate subsequent confirmation to be court-worthy. Samples testing positive or suspicious during Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

For samples testing positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this point, substances are isolated from hair at far lower levels compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis the most complex technique to execute.

Positive Screening findings are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, suspected positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments reveal substance use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating with a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: Demonstrates a drug use pattern over time, instead of just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug assessments incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
