Accredited Drug Testing offers inclusive hair follicle drug assessments in Tubac, AZ. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise in hair testing, supported by numerous centers nationwide, ensures we can conduct the test you need. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair evaluations can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other bespoke analysis options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred drug screening method. Numerous employers, court systems, and substance professionals opt for hair tests instead of conventional urine screenings. Hair follicle evaluations serve entities with strict anti-drug use measures, judiciary requirements, and rules for probationers due to their extended detection time of up to 90 days, observable collection, and resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests are more precise for detecting recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record for long-term intake of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can reveal an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil size) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It’s suggested to use a jeweler's scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t available, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The basic process steps in a laboratory drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the introductory handling of a sample within a lab’s system. It includes checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a distinct LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry not already noted in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While it’s a budget-friendly means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for court acceptability. Any samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening demand subsequent validation.

Should a sample yield presumptive positivity during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Any positive screen result undergoes Confirmation utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed beforehand for confirmation purposes. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation falls under scrutiny by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Complexity to circumvent: It’s extremely challenging to dodge a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It offers a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
