Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Wagoner, Arizona. For your hair or alcohol testing needs, our expertise in hair analysis is backed by a wide network of testing centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body can be utilized. We offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, conducting drug screening has prominently featured hair follicle testing. A shift from urine tests is evident as employers, courts, and substance abuse experts increasingly mandate hair drug tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial entities, and probationary programs frequently prefer hair testing due to its extended drug use detection of approximately 90 days, observed sample collection, and difficulty to circumvent. Nevertheless, for recent drug use detection, within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as a potent means of uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window for alcohol and drugs of up to three months. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For expanded tests such as EtG and panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent weight of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair, while "body hair" represents any other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The four key steps in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the sample's initial entry into the lab's system. This process checks that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug use largely, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples testing positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive result, more hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any initial positive findings is performed using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation when necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Chronological insight: It offers a comprehensive view of drug use patterns over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Does not show recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", these tests focus on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Wagoner, AZ

In the realm of drug testing, hair follicle tests offer a stark advantage over traditional urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
