At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Willow Canyon, Arizona. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, our experts at Accredited Drug Testing are here to assist. With testing centers spread across all cities nationwide, we can efficiently conduct a hair test. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body is usually required. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized options.

In recent years, the trend in drug testing has steadily shifted toward hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now prioritize hair testing over standard urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers utilize hair follicle drug tests. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period—up to 90 days—and its observed collection process, making evasion nearly impossible. For detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window, however, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means to detect substance use, including alcohol and drugs. The structure of hair captures long-term indicators as it grows, containing evidence of drug and alcohol exposure. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage history extending to around a 90-day period. Its collection is straightforward, alteration is challenging, and it is simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hairs (equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) near the scalp results in 100mg of hair, optimal for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For tests with EtG, additional panels, or exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measurement. Should scalp hair not be available, a comparable quantity of body hair is an alternative. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types, including facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The primary process stages within the laboratory for processing a drug testing outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample within the laboratory. This process verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional entries not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. While an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for it to be admissible in legal settings. Samples identified as potentially positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate potential positivity in Screening, additional hair is utilized from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods such as urine or saliva, highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

The Confirmation of a positive screen result is achieved using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples predicted as positive undergo cleaning prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage extending to 90 days, in contrast to the more limited detection timeframe of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating in a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus improving accuracy of the findings.
  • Historical insight: It reveals patterns over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: Drugs typically need 5-7 days post-consumption to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs greater costs than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", this examination assesses the hair strand, not the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
