Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing in Alix, Arkansas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing and nationwide centers offer reliable solutions. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required for testing. We provide analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug testing protocols. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers utilize these tests because they offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are difficult to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a lengthy history of substance exposure by embedding chemical markers in the fibers of a growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair offers roughly up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands (comparable in thickness to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal specimen for analysis and affirmation. For EtG, additional elements, and/or testing surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent mass of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in the lab handling of a drug test outcome encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a specimen within a laboratory's system. This process confirms the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any needed data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical strategy to exclude drug use for the bulk of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be admissible legally. Samples initially flagged as positive in Screening must undergo secondary verification.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is obtained from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are eluted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Validation of any positive preliminary result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as presumptive positives are cleansed preceding confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocol and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is exceptionally challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage history: It illustrates a pattern of substance use over time, rather than recent consumption only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to be detected in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually assesses the hair strand, not the subscalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
