Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Amagon, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing stands as a leader in hair and alcohol testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our tests cover all cities Nationwide. With a need of just 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body, results can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Increased preference for hair follicle drug tests has been noted among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals recently. The hair drug test is often chosen over standard urine tests for its advantages. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation favor hair follicle tests due to their longer detection window, up to 90 days, via an observed collection method that's tough to bypass. Despite this, urine tests remain the go-to for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for substances. It is easy to gather, relatively tough to manipulate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch lock comprising around 200 hair strands (resembling a #2 pencil in size) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimum sample for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additions, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. 'Head hair' specifically pertains to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other hair (such as facial or axillary).

Process Summary

Samples go through four primary stages in the lab for drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning focuses on integrating a sample into the laboratory’s system initially. This process entails confirming the sample is sealed, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial examination for substance abuse. Though cost-effective for ruling out drug presence in most cases, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening need secondary validation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing highly complex.

Positive results from Screening are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is checked against CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair provisions and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can identify drug use over 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair test is challenging, thus yielding more reliable results.
  • Shows usage patterns: Can illustrate drug consumption trends over time, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot determine recent consumption: Drugs need about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Results may vary: Differences like hair color and growth rate can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the examination involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
