In Amity, AR, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have facilities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair, or body hair if necessary, is required. These tests can analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for detecting substances. Employers, as well as legal and substance abuse professionals, often choose this over the standard urine test. Hair tests have advantages such as a 90-day detection window and observed collections that make them tamper-proof compared to urine tests. Nevertheless, for very recent drug use, within the last five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-lasting evidence of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected near the root, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage within roughly a three-month timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hairs (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal sample size for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be utilized. When we mention head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (face, armpits, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a lab comprises four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes incorporating the sample into a lab’s system. This phase ensures proper sealing and shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accomplishes any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid drug abuse assessment. While Screening effectively eliminates drug use for most samples, a positive result necessitates Confirmation for legal validity. Any samples indicating possible positive in Screening must undergo secondary Confirmation.

When a sample is possibly positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In the Extraction phase, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening a particularly complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any samples flagged as possibly positive are cleaned ahead of Confirmation as required. Throughout the lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation, activities are audited under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and against ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer shorter detection durations.
  • Cheating is difficult: Attempting to falsify a hair drug test is quite challenging, providing more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can map a pattern of substance usage across time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation actually analyzes the hair shaft, not the root under the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine testing in Amity, AR, the former stands out for its superior detection capabilities. Hair tests provide a longer detection period, revealing drug use up to 90 days prior, making them valuable for businesses seeking enhanced monitoring. This reliability, plus the difficulty in tampering, renders hair testing a more trustworthy choice than traditional urine tests for employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

Amity, AR companies benefit from hair follicle testing, which extends the window for drug detection significantly. Unlike urine tests, which offer a short-term view, hair tests reach back about 90 days, providing a detailed account of an individual's substance use history. This extended detection is critical for employers who value long-term insights into an employee's or applicant's drug use patterns for thorough screening processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle test is a robust method against tampering, particularly appealing to employers in Amity, AR. Its observed collection process and biological complexity make it extremely challenging to adulterate, ensuring the integrity of results. This resistance to tampering leads to trustworthy outcomes that support a drug-free work environment, providing employers with the assurance they need.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
