Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Arkana, Arkansas. If you require a drug or alcohol test using hair, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this method, and we have nationwide testing centers that can conduct hair tests. In most cases, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests allow for the detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have more frequently included the use of hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and individuals on probation often use hair follicle drug tests. The significant advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended drug detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected through an observed process, offering little room for tampering. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within the previous 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method to determine drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term drug and alcohol markers by embedding them in the fibers of growing strands. Hair samples close to the scalp offer an approximate detection period of 3 months for substances. It’s easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and conducive to shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (equal in width to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, serving as the optimal quantity for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Utilize a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If scalp hair is not present, substitute with equivalent body hair. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab testing process for drug results includes the following stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning processes the sample initially in the laboratory system. It entails verifying proper sealing and transport of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting additional data absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening rapidly checks for substances of abuse. Although it economically excludes drug usage for most samples, positive screenings require confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples identified as potentially positive in Screening undergo further confirmation.

Upon presumptive positive identification during Screening, additional hair from the sample is prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of positive screenings uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples needing confirmation are pre-washed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can track drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have shorter detection spans.
  • Cheat-proof: Cheating on a hair test is challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Indicates historical usage: It records drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to incur higher costs than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variances can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being termed as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
