In Austin, Arkansas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing is unmatched, and with testing centers available across the nation, we're well-equipped to handle all your needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. This method is capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific substances.

The hair follicle drug testing method is gaining popularity for its effectiveness and reliability. Organizations such as employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair over urine tests. This test is preferred by those enforcing a zero-tolerance policy, given its extended detection window of up to 90 days. It's notably challenging to tamper with and ensures an observed collection process, making it almost impossible to falsify results. For recent drug use detection, however, urine tests remain the standard owing to their precision within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are now regarded as a significant instrument in uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a protracted record of alcohol and chemical substances by capturing biomarkers within the threads of the advancing hair filament. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers up to about a three-month timeframe for identifying alcohol and chemicals. Hair acquisition is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and effortlessly transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hairs (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, constituting the ideal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG add-ons or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable volume of body hair should be gathered. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other varieties (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The quartet of fundamental stages in the laboratory evaluation of a drug testing result includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary manipulation of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. It encompasses validating that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data input omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, swift evaluation for substance misuse. Despite being a cost-efficient measure to discount drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result in Screening mandates validation for legal admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample suggests a positive indication during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening considerably complex.

Verification of any affirmative Screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing prior to verification as required. The complete laboratory process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can reveal drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which possess a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: It is extremely tough to trick a hair drug exam, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: It can delineate a trend of drug usage over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically pricier compared to alternative testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistency: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair development can influence the concentration of drug remnants in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination inspects the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
