Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. For those in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, we specialize in this type of testing and have facilities Nationwide, including every city, where such tests are conducted. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts is required. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored options.

In the past years, the approach to drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle assessments more frequently. Organizations, judicial systems, and substance disorder experts now often favor hair drug tests over traditional urine assessments. Hair follicle evaluations are implemented by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal panels, and those on probation due to their extended detection timeline, usually up to 90 days, making the process observed and nearly invulnerable to deceit. Yet, for substance use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer about a 3-month detection window for both alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a collection of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If there's no scalp hair available, an equivalent measure of body hair is acceptable. In reference to head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of entering a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry needed outside of the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial check for drug abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive indicates that confirmation is necessary for judicial purposes. Any samples showing potential positivity in Screening demand a follow-up confirmation.

For samples indicated as positive during the Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positives undergo a cleaning before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests for drugs can identify consumption over a period as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer shorter detection times.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is particularly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in increased reliability of findings.
  • Offers historical patterns: Provides insights into the pattern of drug consumption over time rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for substances to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigment and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
