Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Auvergne, Arkansas. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair assessments, with facilities available in all cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is suitable for analysis. Hair evaluations can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, the method for executing drug assessments has increasingly embraced hair follicle drug evaluations. A growing number of employers, judicial bodies, and specialists in Substance Abuse are opting for hair drug testing over conventional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are employed by employers to uphold zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The chief advantage of a hair test is its longer detection period, typically spanning up to 90 days, collected through an observed process and posing significant difficulty in being manipulated. Nonetheless, when assessing very recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now regarded as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair fibers capture biomarkers in the growing strand, providing a timeline of alcohol and other drug use. If taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use history for up to around three months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is tough, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A segment of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the standard for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional items, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair might be gathered. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes any other types (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

Four key phases are part of laboratory drug test processing: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample first enters a lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry if the electronic chain of custody is not comprehensive.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for potential substance abuse. While cost-effective for most samples, any sample with a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. All presumptive positives from the Screening need further verification.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, extra hair is taken from the existing sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lesser concentration than in other testing methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing more complex to conduct.

Confirmed positive results from Screening undergo GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS confirmation. Samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as required. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria alongside ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can disclose drug use for a maximum of 90 days, offering a longer detection span than urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Due to its inherent difficulty to cheat, a hair drug test yields more reliable results.
  • Chronological insights: Furnishes an account of substance use over time, beyond recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage undetectable: Hair requires approximately 5–7 days before drugs become detectable.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," these actually analyze the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
