Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Avoca, Arkansas. For those requiring drug or alcohol testing through hair samples, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we maintain facilities in every city across the nation equipped to conduct these tests. Sample collection typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas. Hair testing can identify drug, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored testing options.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has increased significantly. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are adopted by employers with strict no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and probation entities due to their ability to detect drug use over an extended period—typically 90 days. This test is collected under observation and is nearly unfeasible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain preferable for detecting drugs consumed within the prior 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This approach offers an extended timeline of substance usage, as hair locks in biomarkers within the fibers as it grows. When hair is cut close to the scalp, it can indicate drug and alcohol use over a period of up to 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, approximating 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil thickness), provides around 100mg of hair, which is perfect for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional markers, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to hair from other regions, such as facial or underarm hair.

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test in the lab follows four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial sample processing phase in a lab's system. It involves ensuring the sample's integrity in terms of sealing and shipping, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a quick preliminary check for drug presence. While it's a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug use suspicions in most cases, any positive screening result must be confirmed for legal validity. Samples that show positive presumptions at this stage require thorough confirmation.

In cases where screening suggests a positive result, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. This process extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), a reason why hair drug screening is challenging.

Confirmation of an initial positive result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Each sample with presumptive positives is cleansed as needed before confirmation. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, abides by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are challenging to deceit, producing more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insights: They reveal patterns of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing forms.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Avoca, AR

Choosing hair follicle testing over urine tests is advantageous due to its superior detection capabilities. Hair testing's extended detection window allows for a comprehensive review of an individual's substance use history, making it a preferred solution in Avoca.

Unlike urine tests that capture recent usage, hair tests detect a broader spectrum of drugs over a longer period. This feature ensures accuracy and reliability, thereby providing companies with the assurance they need to maintain drug-free workplaces effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
