Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bates, Arkansas. If you're in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our specialty lies in hair testing. We operate facilities nationwide that offer hair testing services. Generally, hair should measure 1.5 to 2 inches from the head's crown or other body areas. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer custom hair testing solutions.

In recent years, drug testing techniques have increasingly leaned towards the use of hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial entities, and those on probation. The key advantage is its extensive detection window, up to 90 days, with samples collected under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. Nevertheless, urine tests remain accurate for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol history. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to approximately three months for substances. Collection is straightforward, it's somewhat resistant to tampering, and it can be easily transported.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, ideal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is best to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we talk about head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab’s system. This stage ensures that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Any positive screening outcome is confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Provides usage pattern: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
