Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle screening services in Bay, Arkansas. Whether you're in need of assessing drug or alcohol presence, our expertise lies in hair assessment, and we boast a broad network of centers across the country to perform hair analysis. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from your head or body. Hair screening can detect substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In the past few years, hair follicle examinations have increasingly become a common method for drug screening. Many businesses, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are leaning towards hair drug analyses over the usual urine samples. Hair follicle assessments are favored by employers with strict drug-free rules, juridical systems, and probationary cases. The main advantage is the longer detection window of up to 90 days, conducted in a controlled setting, making it extremely difficult to falsify. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The composition of hair offers an extensive record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When obtained close to the scalp, a hair sample can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to approximately three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (about the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional categories, or those beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the hair sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a proportional quantity of body hair can be used. Note that 'head hair' specifically indicates scalp hair, while 'body hair' includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample goes through initial processing in a lab’s system. This phase includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry not captured through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial brief test for drugs of abuse. Although it is cost-efficient and applicable to most samples, a positive result from Screening needs further confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples that screen positive require additional verification.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial collection for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug screening is particularly challenging to conduct.

Verification of positive Screening results occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples initially tested as positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a narrower detection period.
  • High resistance to tampering: Manipulating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing the precision of the results.
  • Historical insight: This method can illustrate a trend of drug use over a significant period, as opposed to only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect recent usage: Drugs need about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bay, AR, hair follicle tests are superior to urine testing due to their advanced detection capabilities. They offer unmatched accuracy and reliability in identifying drug use.

Unlike traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing provides a longer detection window, enabling a more comprehensive drug usage history. This makes it ideal for employers with zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

In Bay, AR, the value of hair follicle testing lies in its extended detection period. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, it grants employers a thorough view of an individual's substance consumption.

Hair tests give a comprehensive insight into a potential or current employee's drug history, aiding in informed decision-making for maintaining a safe work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Bay, AR employers find hair follicle tests tamper-resistant, significantly lowering the chance of sample manipulation. This ensures the results remain trustworthy and unbiased.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
