Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle substance testing throughout Beirne, Arkansas. For hair drug or alcohol assessments, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist and offers testing centers nationwide, capable of administering hair tests. Most assessments require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specialized testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent times. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine samples. This type of test is favored by zero-tolerance employers, the judiciary, and individuals on probation. Hair tests provide a longer drug use detection window (up to 90 days), are conducted with observation, and are difficult to manipulate. For detecting recent use within 5 days, urine testing remains most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and substance use due to the entrapment of biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of up to around 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test process includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample within the laboratory system. This involves confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair compliance and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Cheating is challenging: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides longitudinal data: It offers a chronological pattern of drug use, not solely focusing on recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection is limited: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detected in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other testing modalities.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
