Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ben Hur, Arkansas. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we maintain centers across all cities Nationwide equipped to conduct such tests. You typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, though body hair can be used. Hair tests can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored options.

Lately, drug testing often favors hair follicle tests over urine tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists increasingly demand hair drug tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probation officers. The major advantage is the longer drug detection window, generally up to 90 days, ensured by an observed collection process that's hard to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most reliable for recent, within 5 days, drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, providing a comprehensive history of substance use. When cut near the scalp, it offers a detection window of around three months for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and conveniently transported.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp results in about 100mg, which is the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, enhancements, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg. It is recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, it solely pertains to scalp hair, whereas body hair denotes all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The fundamental stages in the laboratory processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes its initial processing within the laboratory’s system. This step verifies that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any additional manual data entry required in the absence of an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening stage performs a brief initial check for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective method to dismiss drug usage in many samples, any positive results require confirmation to ensure legal admissibility. All samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any presumptively positive results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect substances up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Tracks historical usage: Provides a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence the amount of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Ben Hur, AR, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in several key ways. While traditional urine tests provide a snapshot of recent drug use, hair tests offer a broader perspective. They detect a longer history of substance use, making them invaluable for understanding patterns over time. This wider window of detection boosts their reliability and accuracy.

The enhanced detection range doesn't just reflect a more comprehensive drug history; it assures employers and institutions of its effectiveness. Furthermore, the stringent testing environment reduces manipulation, providing peace of mind about the test's integrity and reliability.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Ben Hur, AR, offers an extraordinary detection window of up to 90 days, considerably longer than traditional testing methods. This extended period allows employers to see a broader spectrum of an employee's or applicant's substance use history. Hair follicle testing thereby presents a deeper insight into patterns that might not be visible with short-term detection methods like urine tests.

This testing capability works effectively for organizations desiring a thorough understanding of an individual's substance abuse history. By revealing long-term usage trends, hair testing supports informed decision-making, crucial for maintaining a drug-free workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests in Ben Hur, AR, provides unmatched testing integrity. Unlike other methods susceptible to sample adulteration, hair tests significantly reduce such risks. The process of collecting hair samples is highly controlled, minimizing the opportunities for tampering and ensuring the reliability of results.

This reduced risk is particularly crucial for employers and legal entities relying on the test's accuracy. The robustness of the method reassures all parties involved, maintaining trust in the outcomes. Hair testing's tamper-resistant nature guarantees that the results are both reliable and consistent.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
