Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Black Rock, Arkansas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with testing centers available in all cities Nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom analyses.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become the preferred method for conducting drug screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often choose hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair tests benefit those with zero-tolerance policies, judicial cases, and probation programs due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, are collected under observation, and offer a challenge to circumvent. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term insight into alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair not be available, a similar amount of body hair might be taken. The term head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample into a lab's system. This incorporates ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data input not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a primary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

For any sample showing presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen, prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening notably challenging.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days in contrast to urine tests that have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are very challenging to compromise, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical use patterns: They can reveal drug use patterns over time, rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent usage detection: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other types of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the sub-scalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Black Rock, AR, hair follicle analysis triumphs over urine testing in several aspects. Superior detection accuracy leads the way, as hair tests precisely identify substance use history.

While urine tests capture recent drug use, hair tests provide a more comprehensive outlook by unveiling substance patterns over extended periods, thus ensuring enhanced reliability in screening.

Extended Detection Window

The power of hair follicle evaluations lies in their extended analysis time, stretching up to 90 days in Black Rock, AR. Employers gain insights into past substance history, eliminating blind spots in screening processes.

Unlike urine tests limited to recent use, hair testing casts a wide net, capturing an extensive window of potential substance exposure, offering valuable insights for hiring decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
